University Honors Scholar

The University Honors Scholar Program is a great alternative to completing UNLV's general education core requirements. Once enrolled in the Honors College, you'll complete the University Honors core curriculum along with the general education requirements. The best part is that University Honors courses are designed to complement and enhance every major at UNLV.

The Honors core curriculum extends thought-provoking discussions in more academically stimulating classes to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the topics presented. What's more, you'll benefit from a high-quality education at a large university in what "looks and feels" like a small, liberal arts college setting.

Honors Core Curriculum

HON 105H to be taken during a student's first semester

The HON 100H course needs to be completed by the end of the student's first year at UNLV.

  3. Constitution Requirement. 3 credits

  6. Science Requirement. 7-8 credits
HON 230H and/or HON 235H (Or an appropriate laboratory science course)

If only one of HON 230 and HON 235 is taken, then one more regular science course is required.

  7. Social Science Requirement. 3 credits
HON 200xH (select from Psychology-200A, Microeconomics-200B, Macroeconomics-200C, Sociology-200D, Cultural Anthropology-200E or a regular course that meets the university's definition of Social Sciences)

  8. Fine Arts Requirement. 3 credits
One regular course from the fine and performing arts field (Art, Music, Theater, Film, Dance) Please see page 34 of the 2008-2010 undergraduate catalog for a list of courses that fulfill this requirement.

  9. Foreign Language Requirement. 6-12 credits
Honors students are required to complete a language through the second-year level (214 or 222 level). Students with significant language experience, but no formal training or other credentials, may use credit by examination or seek placement into a higher level course through the Foreign Languages department (phone no. 702-895-3431). They can receive credit or placement into a 114, 213 or even higher level courses.

Example: a student is placed directly into SPAN 214. The student would be required to complete SPAN 214. To earn the required six credits a student could then elect to take SPAN 301 or see an advisor to find an appropriate culture course related to the language completed.

  10. Honors Seminar Requirement. 12 credits
Four HON 400H special topic seminars to be taken in the junior and senior years.

One seminar can be replaced by an approved 700-level course from a department other than a student's major. Participants in one of UNLV's semester study abroad programs may replace one honors seminar for each semester off campus. All students must, however, take at least two HON 400H seminars. Should you replace a seminar with either study abroad or by taking a 700-level class, please contact your Honors College advisor to discuss the effect of this on your Honors Core Curriculum requirements.

  11. Multicultural & International Requirement.
For a list of acceptable courses that satisfies the multicultural requirement, please see http://www.unlv.edu/committees/gec. The Honors College Foreign Language requirement satisfies the International requirement for Honors students.

  12. AP Examination Information
All AP and some IB exam credits can be used to substitute items in the Honor Core Curriculum, with the exception of the English Language/Composition and Literature/Composition tests. The Honors College will still require students earning ENG 101 credit through AP to take all three Honors English classes. Substituted classes do not count toward the 31 credit Honors class requirement; however, all your AP credits will be integrated into your program of study. Contact your Honors College advisor for more information.
